Brand and campaign specific.
What are hash tags?
A Hashtag —symbol (#)—is a type of metadata tag used on social networks such as Twitter and other micro blogging services. It lets users apply dynamic, user-generated tagging that helps other users easily find messages with a specific theme or content.
Users create and use hashtags by placing an octothorpe (also called a number sign, or pound sign) # usually in front of a word or unspaced phrase in a message.
The hashtag may contain letters, digits, and underscores. Searching for that hashtag yields each message that someone has tagged with it.
A hashtag archive is consequently collected into a single stream under the same hashtag.[ For example, on the photo-sharing service Instagram, the hashtag #bluesky allows users to find all the posts that have been tagged using that hashtag.

Hashtags were first widely used on Twitter, but they have become common on other social media platforms as well including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google Plus and Pinterest.
Hashtags are words or key phrases preceeded by a pound (#) symbol and are used to gather similarly-themed posts under one umbrella. For example, at the height of the 2012 Olympics, the leading hashtag was # Olympics or, more controversially, #NBCFail.
